Research into lower mobility among people with a migration background in the Netherlands – opportunities for improvement!

“Research by the Netherlands Institute for Transport Policy Analysis (KiM) shows that people with a migration background in the Netherlands are generally less mobile than those without one. They are more likely to stay at home for an entire day, travel shorter total distances and visit fewer destinations. Notably, people with a migration background generally have longer commuting distances and corresponding journey times than workers without a migration background.

The study, ‘Multicultural diversity in mobility’, examined the travel behaviour and travel opportunities of first- and second-generation people with a migration background in the Netherlands. It compared different groups within Dutch society, taking account of factors such as age, residential environment and income.

Currently, one in four Dutch residents has a migration background, and this is expected to rise to one in three within 20 years. They therefore have a significant influence on mobility in the Netherlands. However, the Netherlands Institute for Transport Policy Analysis (KiM) stresses that it is difficult to generalise about travel behaviour given the diversity of groups and travel patterns within these communities.

The research shows that people with a migration background cycle considerably less often than those without one. Lack of storage facilities, bicycle theft, fear of cycling and the bicycle's lower status may help explain these differences. Conversely, people with a migration background use public transport more often and walk more.

Encouraging cycling and improving cycling facilities can help increase mobility among people with a migration background. The research by the Netherlands Institute for Transport Policy Analysis (KiM) provides valuable insights and highlights the need for inclusive, accessible mobility.
