Smart charging is essential for a more sustainable future

With 90,000 charging points, the Netherlands leads Europe in absolute numbers. There are 307,000 charging points across the EU. According to the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA), the Netherlands has more than 90,000 charging points. Germany ranks second with almost 60,000.
The growth of charging points in the Netherlands faces a challenge by 2025, according to knowledge centre ElaadNL. Its researchers suggest that the electricity grid in thousands of neighbourhoods could no longer cope with the load, preventing the addition of new charging points.
There is a solution!
Charging point numbers can certainly continue to grow if the Netherlands makes smart charging the norm. Smart charging means chargers start drawing electricity during quieter periods, spreading demand on the grid and preventing peak loads.
Omega-Parkeren en Mobiliteit follows the targets of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management and Vexpan, Platform Parkeren Nederland: by 2025, an average of 5% of spaces in parking facilities should have a charging point, increasing to an average of 10% by 2030.
To achieve these targets, smart charging is an essential part of making mobility in the Netherlands more sustainable. This is particularly true if ElaadNL's forecast proves correct: around five million charging points in the Netherlands by 2050!
