Parking permit fees rise in 2024

In 2024, the cost of a first parking permit is rising by almost 5% on average compared with 2023. In Amsterdam, where permits are most expensive, residents now pay €631.20 a year, slightly more than Utrecht's €615.48. This makes Amsterdam the city with the highest parking charges in the Netherlands, according to recent research by Vereniging Eigen Huis.

📈 Nationally, most Dutch municipalities offering parking permits, 88 out of 129, are raising their fees, with an average increase of 4.7%. Fees remain unchanged in 40 municipalities, while Zoetermeer is the only municipality where costs are lower this year.

💰 Traditionally, Amsterdam and Utrecht have the most expensive parking permits in the Netherlands, at around six times the rates in Rotterdam and The Hague, the cheapest among the large cities. Permit holders in Katwijk and Noordwijk pay the least: €20 a year.

📊 Amsterdam permit holders face the largest absolute increase this year. They pay an extra €57, an increase of almost 10%. Deventer follows closely with an annual rise of €50, or 16% more than last year.

🚗 The largest percentage increase is in Bunschoten, in the province of Utrecht. Parking permit costs there are 74% higher this year, an increase of just over €27. In Rijswijk, permit holders face a 48% rise, adding around €22.

🏙️ Vereniging Eigen Huis points out that rising parking costs are often linked to municipal policies to reduce car traffic in city centres. At the same time, municipalities are preparing for financial challenges from expected future deficits. “Following a revision to the distribution of the municipal fund, more than 80% of municipalities expect substantial deficits in 2026 and 2027,” a spokesperson says. This could lead to significant increases in property tax, although municipalities can also raise revenue by increasing parking charges.
